Show Information

High Society is the 1998 Broadway Adaptation of Philip Barry’s The Philadelphia Story, a play which continued the meteoric stage and screen career of one of New York’s favorite actresses, the legendary Katherine Hepburn. The film version of the play, set in 1930s Philadelphia, also starred Katherine Hepburn, This time with her chosen co-stars, Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart. Like its predecessor, the film was a huge, world-wide hit. The Philadelphia Story continues to be an extremely popular play, with regular revivals on the West End and Broadway. A witty, elegant and sophisticated comedy of manners, with mixed identities and more the passing references to A Midsummer Nights Dream, Like Veuve Cliquot, it is well crafted, mature and superbly entertaining.

The 1950s wide-screen, Technicolor adaptation only served to broaden the appeal. With music added by Cole Porter and the Hollywood star power of Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, the film moved the action to 1950sLong Island, East Coast playground of the rich and Famous.

The All-singing-all-dancing 1998 adaption blends the two. Set in the elegance of 1930s Oyster Bay in upstate New York, the musical has included most of the film's Cole Porter Melodies and added several more. Among the standards are “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?”, “True Love”, “Samantha”, “Riding High”, “Just One Of Those Things”, and the list goes on.

We Require 9 Elegant-looking Singer/Actor Principals to carry the action while 12 Servants act as ensemble, Chorus and Commentators.

High Society is a comedy about an upper crust, American Girl with a dislike and distrust of the press but a love of sport, especially swimming. Any resemblance to the privacy loving Miss Hepburn is, of course, purely intentional. On the eve of her marriage to boring business man George, her former husband turns up to disrupt proceedings and attempt to win her back. The complications and farce are heightened by the addition of two pushy reporters, a philandering father, a drunken uncle and a deliciously precocious thirteen year old sister. All is blended with wit, charm, elegance and style and set to the tune of Porter’s incomparable music and lyrics. “What A Swell Party This Is”!!
