Rehearsals have commenced for
EDUCATING RITA
A comedy by Willy Russell
directed by
David Baggallay
with
Jo Street as Rita and David Tattersall as Frank
Educating Rita was first performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company in June 1980, and in the same year was voted “Best Comedy of The Year”. In 1983 the play was voted the fourth most popular play on the British stage, and a film version was released starring Michael Caine and Julie Walters
as Frank and Rita.
Since then, Educating Rita has remained a very popular play, with regular revivals around the world by professional companies, frequent placement on school study lists, and many performances by amateur companies.
Rita is a hairdresser who is determined to escape from her dreary routine, and decides to enrol as a mature age student with the Open University. During the course of the play her tutor, Frank, learns as much from her about real life as she learns from him about literature, and a touching relationship develops.
